According to Beshear, the reports were never confirmed, but they raised enough concern for him to request an official update from McConnell's office. The governor emphasized that the lack of public information fueled uncertainty and speculation across the country.
McConnell had been out of the public eye for nearly a month after suffering a serious fall that left him briefly unconscious. He was later treated for mild pneumonia and is currently recovering in a rehabilitation facility. Governor Beshear believes a brief video message or public appearance would go a long way toward ending the rumors and restoring public confidence.
