Welsh singer Bonnie Tyler, best known for the 1983 hit "Total Eclipse of the Heart," has died at the age of 75. Her family said she unexpectedly passed away in hospital in Portugal as a result of the illness she was being treated for.

Tyler had been hospitalized in Faro, Portugal in May for emergency intestinal surgery, later reported to be for a burst appendix, and had to be resuscitated after going into cardiac arrest. She was placed in a medically induced coma to aid her recovery. In June, her spokesperson said she was no longer in a coma but remained very unwell and in intensive care.

Born Gaynor Hopkins, the Welsh singer rocketed to international fame in the 1980s and became known for her distinctive husky voice, a result of vocal cord surgery earlier in her career. Beyond her signature hit, she released other beloved songs including "Holding Out for a Hero" and "It's a Heartache." She represented the UK in the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest and was made an MBE in 2023 for her services to music.

She had been scheduled for a UK and European tour before her hospitalization.
