👁️🤖 A Transparent Mask Designed to Confuse AI—Not People

What if you could protect your privacy without hiding your face?

That question inspired Dutch designer Jip van Leeuwenstein to create "Surveillance Exclusion" as his graduation project at HKU.

Unlike a traditional mask, it's completely transparent. Its ribbed, lens-like surface bends light in ways that subtly distort facial features such as the jawline, eyebrows, and lips, making it more difficult for some AI facial recognition systems to accurately map a face—while still allowing people to see natural expressions.

The project wasn't created as a commercial product or a guaranteed way to defeat surveillance. Instead, it was designed to spark a conversation about privacy in an age where AI-powered facial recognition is becoming increasingly common.

It's also important to remember that modern biometric systems don't rely only on faces. Some can identify people using body shape, posture, or even the way they walk, meaning this concept wouldn't make someone anonymous.

Rather than offering a perfect solution, "Surveillance Exclusion" raises an important question: How can we protect personal privacy while preserving human connection? Sometimes, the most powerful designs are the ones that make us think. 💡
